I feel it is important to show the effects drug use can bring into the community. It does not only harm the human consuming it, it also harms the environment through littering and pollution and everything leads back to the community. This photo shows how frequently these products can be seen in the community. It may not be noticeable until you start looking closely and see how bad the situation is. Most people look up when walking so they don’t notice the trash around them scattered on the ground, but small and young children do see it and this builds upon their influence.
Siento que es importante mostrar los efectos que el consumo de drogas puede traer a la comunidad. No sólo daña al humano que lo consume, sino que también daña el medio ambiente a través de la basura y la contaminación y todo lleva de vuelta a la comunidad. Esta foto muestra con qué frecuencia estos productos se pueden ver en la comunidad. Puede que no se note hasta que empieces a mirar de cerca y veas lo mala que es la situación. This photo is an unsupervised area of the P.E. field at my high school. Most students do end up vaping or just do their business here. The P.E. field is very big with many students with only two teachers there to supervise each day during lunch time.

This photo is a replication of a situation that often happens in the bathrooms at our school. Unfortunately this happens a lot in school where students should only worry about their education and not when they’re going to hit a blunt or vape. This photo shows that many people have been influenced to smoke or vape at a pretty young age. I hope that this will help bring awareness to teachers and staff about some things that go on in restrooms and that they should take more precautions.
Esta foto es una réplica de una situación que a menudo ocurre en los baños de nuestra escuela. Desafortunadamente esto sucede mucho en la escuela donde los estudiantes sólo deben preocuparse por su educación y no cuando van a golpear un contundente o vape. Esta foto muestra que muchas personas han sido influenciadas para fumar o vapear a una edad bastante temprana. Espero que esto ayude a sensibilizar a los maestros y al personal sobre algunas cosas que pasan en los baños y que deben tomar más precauciones.

In this picture, we captured a girl walking by a marijuana dispensary. Right next to that is a ballet school where little kids often take classes. It is very concerning that kids are very close to these types of businesses. It also sends the message that it is okay and normal to smoke, when it is not. I hope that adults/people will stop smoking and vaping around young kids. They are vulnerable and this can lead to more generations vaping and smoking.
En esta foto, capturamos a una chica caminando por un dispensario de marihuana. Justo al lado de eso hay una escuela de ballet donde los niños pequeños a menudo toman clases. Es muy preocupante que los niños estén muy cerca de este tipo de negocios. También envía el mensaje de que está bien y normal fumar, cuando no lo está. Espero que los adultos/personas dejen de fumar y vapear alrededor de los niños pequeños. Son vulnerables y esto puede llevar a más generaciones vapeando y fumando.

Passing by the community on a normal Sunday morning, I look to my left and I see a big sign selling cannabis. It was surprising to see there was an entire store solely for the purpose of marijuana placed so openly in the public for everyone to see, including children and teenagers since it is obviously visually intriguing.
Pasando por la comunidad en un domingo normal por la mañana, mire a mi izquierda y veo un gran letrero vendiendo cannabis. Fue de sopresa ver que había una tienda entera sólo con el propósito de la marihuana colocada tan abiertamente en el público para que todo el mundo lo viera, incluidos los niños y adolescentes, ya que es obviamente visualmente intrigante.

“The Hidden Smoke Shop”
The smoke shop is a place where people get cigarettes and other types of smoke material. There are many things that this smoke shop is doing wrong. First, it is in a family plaza and the smoke shop does not belong there. There is a restaurant to the right and a store on the left, and on the right corner is a yum yum donut. When i was there the place would feel sketchy and my sister would not feel comfortable. After i saw this place i went to google maps and then i saw that the place was not named. It was like it did not exist. That is bad for the family that would like to visit this plaza to go eat at the restaurant or go do a payment to a cell phone, and the family will get affected.
“La Tienda de Humo Escondido”
La tienda de humo es un lugar donde las personas obtienen cigarrillos y otros tipos de material de humo. Hay muchas cosas que esta tienda de humo está haciendo mal. En primer lugar, está en una plaza familiar y la tienda de humo no pertenece allí. Hay un restaurante a la derecha y una tienda a la izquierda, y en la esquina derecha hay una tienda de donuts yum yum. Cuando estaba allí el lugar se sentia sketchy y mi hermana no se sentiría cómoda. Después de ver este lugar i fui a google maps y luego vi que el lugar no fue nombrado. Era como si no existiera. Eso es malo para la familia que le gustaría visitar esta plaza para ir a comer al restaurante o ir a hacer un pago de su teléfono celular, y la familia puede se afectada.

“Into the Unknown”
Whittier Boulevard is a very popular place that hundreds of people pass by each and every day either in their cars or walking down the street. It is also home to many illicit dispensaries, because these dispensaries are illegal the only ones that know are those that are “in the know.” Sadly most of the people who are in the know are youth that feel they don’t have any other option. These youth are the ones most affected in the community with unrestricted access and availability to marijuana.

Whittier Boulevard es un lugar muy popular que cientos de personas pasan por todos los días, ya sean en sus automóviles o caminando por la calle. También es el hogar de muchos dispensarios ilícitos, porque estos dispensarios ilegales son los únicos que saben y que están “en el conocimiento”. Lamentablemente, la mayoría de las personas que están en el conocimiento son jóvenes que sienten que no tienen otra opción. “Parks Are Meant for Kids”
“Let’s go the park”, was a phrase I used as a child to let my parents know I wanted to go out and be a kid. Now, if I let my mom know I am going to the park, she thinks the worse. The innocence of wanting to go to the park has now gone missing. Over the years, parks have gotten lonelier of spirits of children, but high of teens who like to “Just have fun”.

“Vamos al parque”, fue una frase que utilicé de niño para que mis padres supieran que quería salir y ser un niño. Ahora, si le hago saber a mi mamá que voy al parque, ella piensa lo peor. La inocencia de querer ir al parque ha desaparecido. A lo largo de los años, los parques se han vuelto más solitarios de los espíritus de los niños, pero alto de los adolescentes que les gusta “Simplemente divertirse”.

I think that marijuana has affected my brother in a bad way, because he is basically addicted and he won’t admit it. He has a lot of problems but it’s because of all the stuff he has done and marijuana has been one of the main reasons why all those problems have happened. My brother goes out his way just to find a way to have his hands filled with marijuana. He prefers to starve then not have marijuana. He doesn’t really know how to control himself even when he says “he does.” I think overall it’s had a negative impact on him. Imagine how many others have been affected the same way, and it’s not even just themselves – it also affects people around them like their families and friends.
Creo que la marihuana ha afectado a mi hermano de mala manera, porque es básicamente adicto y no lo admitirá. Tiene muchos problemas, pero es por todas las cosas que ha hecho y la marihuana ha sido una de las principales razones por las que han ocurrido todos esos problemas. Mi hermano sale por su camino sólo para encontrar la manera de tener las manos llenas de marihuana. Prefiere morir de hambre y luego no tener marihuana. Realmente no sabe cómo controlarse a sí mismo incluso cuando dice “lo hace”. Creo que en general ha tenido un impacto negativo en él. This is my community park, Charles White Park, which I frequent with my family. There are picnic tables at the park, which are usually occupied by marijuana smokers. I wanted to share this photo because I wish the picnic tables would this empty on a regular basis without marijuana smokers, so that me and my family can use them without inhaling second-hand smoke. What I hope people will take away from this photo is that families should not feel uncomfortable to use the picnic tables. If you are a person that smokes at the park, you should realize that people like me and my family who don’t have back yards would love to have access to the park. When we see people smoking at the park it makes us feel like we don’t belong, and it tells other smokers that its okay to smoke at the park.
Este es mi parque comunitario, Charles White Park, que visito frecuenta con mi familia. Hay mesas de pícnic en el parque, que por lo general están ocupados por fumadores de marihuana. Quiero compartir esta foto porque deseo que dejaran las mesas de picnic solas de forma regular sin fumadores de marihuana, para que mi familia y yo puedamos usarlas sin inhalar humo de segunda mano. My normal is not your normal. When I walk to school or just around my neighborhood, I see blunt wraps, weed capsules, beer bottles, and cigarette butts. I see homelessness and substance use because people are trying to cope through hardships. In my community, South LA, drugs are out there and easy to get. It is easy for people to get used to seeing so many liquor stores, smoke shops and dispensaries, but it should not be our everyday life. The “normal” of South LA impacts people’s health-it can cause asthma, lung issues and cancer. My normal is not your normal and it needs to stop.
Mi normalidad no es tu normalidad. Cuando camino a la escuela o a mi vecindario, veo envolturas contundentes, cápsulas de hierba, botellas de cerveza y colillas de cigarrillos. Veo la falta de vivienda y el consumo de sustancias porque la gente está tratando de hacer frente a las dificultades. En mi comunidad, El sur de Los Angeles las drogas están ahí afuera y son fáciles de conseguir. Es fácil para la gente acostumbrarse a ver tantas licorerías, tiendas de humo y dispensarios, pero no debe ser nuestra vida normal. While at a small crepe and smoothie store on Melrose Blvd, my family discovered an interesting sign that grasped our immediate attention. Normally, the signs say “NO SMOKING” ,but on this one, it had “NO MARIJUANA” as well. By the time we got our order, we finally understood why this sign was so necessary: we could smell marijuana from a short distance from the store. This incident demonstrated the prevalence of marijuana use in public. It was all the more shocking because a huge school called Fairfax High School is located just a few blocks down the smokers. It shows that legalization of marijuana has exposed a lot of people- including teens- to marijuana smoking. Despite the dangers of marijuana use, it is deemed to be normal and common nowadays in Los Angeles. This is a bad indicator revealing the growing popularity of marijuana smoking among young people.
Mientras en una pequeña tienda de crepe y batidos en Melrose Blvd., mi familia descubrió un letrero interesante que nos llamó la atención de inmediato. Normalmente el letrero decía “NO FUME” pero este tenía “NO MARIHUANA” también. Para ese entonces, nos dieron la orden. Finalmente comprendimos por que el anuncio era necesario. Pudimos oler la marihuana hacia una corta distancia desde la tienda. Esta incidencia demostró la prevalencia del usa de la marihuana en público. Era mas sorprendente porque hay una escuela muy grande llamada Fairfax High School que se encuentra a solo unas cuadras de los fumadores. Esto enseña que la legalización de la marihuana ha expuesto a mucha gente -incluyendo los jóvenes- a fumar la marihuana. A pesar de los peligros del consumo de marihuana, se considera normal y común hoy en día en Los Ángeles. Este es un mal indicador que revela la creciente popularidad del consumo de la marihuana entre los jóvenes.

“The Daily Commute”
Here we see what a typical walk from school looks like for many students of Cal High in Whittier. Just one block away from the school students encounter an illegal marijuana dispensary right next to a popular food joint and only a couple of doors away from a liquor store and a 7-11.

“My Next-Door Neighbors”
Imagine waking up every day and stepping outside to do all your daily activities: walk the dog, going to school, going to work, going to the store or just simply play outside your home, but right next door you have a marijuana dispensary. Dealing with all the cars and patrons this business brings about daily is what the families living in these apartments in Whittier have to deal with.

Pero al lado de allí, hay un dispensario de marihuana y también tienes que tratar con todos los automóviles y los clientes que este negocio trae a diario- esto es lo que las familias que viven en estos apartamentos en la ciudad de Whittier tienen que lidiar. “Not Your Mom’s Tupperware”
Walking around Amigo Park in West Whittier is not uncommon to find these colorful containers sometimes blue, sometimes green, sometimes white. These containers are most commonly used to store and carry marijuana.

“The Walk Home”
A student walking home along Whittier Blvd., across the store front for Daily Greens, a marijuana dispensary. What we can’t see in the pictue is less than a block away on the same side walk she will incounter another marijuana dispensary a long with several places where she can purchase alcohol. This is her daily walk home from school.

“Not So Happy Hour”
This dispensary on Whittier Blvd just a block away from an other dispensary and doors away from business that sales alcoholic beverages. This business is on the walk home from school of several students of local elementary and middle schools. They advertise “Happy Hour” on a daily basis even though dispensaries are prohibited from having that type of promotions.

“Too Close”
The Lit Corner located next to the 605 freeway on Whittier Blvd. This dispensary is located in the same shopping center as a liquor store in violation of the rule of how close a dispensary can be to business that sells alcohol.

It is not uncommon to see build boards advertising marijuana products and/or marijuana dispensaries. Here we can see an advertisement of an online store, because Whittier doesn’t have enough store fronts!

“Un-holy Trash Pile”
At least a couple of times community members from Los Nietos have witnessed trash piles from dispensearies being dumped in a parking lot across from the church. People are stealing the trash from the marjuana dispensaries looking to score their next hit.

The advertisements and consumption of marijuana have negatively impacted the community. Every day you see less and less people hanging out in a healthy way outside their homes, but rather smoking to pass time. Youth are now the main target of these companies and their only goal is a mass production of these chemically altered products. Nowadays streets reek with the stench of cotton candy and bubble gum marijuana which begins to deteriorate a healthy community.
Los anuncios y la consunción de marihuana tienen un impacto negativo en la comunidad. Cada día se ve menos y menos gente pasando el rato de una manera saludable fuera de sus hogares. En lugar de eso, se la pasan fumando para pasar el tiempo. Los jóvenes son ahora el objetivo principal de estas empresas y su único objetivo es la producción masiva de estos productos alterados químicamente. Hoy en día las calles apestan con el helor de algodón de azúcar y goma de mascar de marihuana que comienza a deteriorar una comunidad saludable.
Through this project, youth have brought up additional concerns on alcohol and other drugs that they experience in their lives.

Found behind the tables during lunch, are a bunch of puff bar packages that had been lazily gotten rid of. Not only are students smoking during school hours, but they don’t even take the time to dispose of the evidence correctly, unafraid of any consequences because of how normalized it’s been. Laying next to a spork just as if it were any regular trash you’d find on the ground on school premises. You see kids promoting their drug-selling business on social media as if they were selling food or any other regular product. Is it unfair that they make so much money doing something illegal, or do you praise them for making money at such a young age regardless of all the negative consequences? Are kids smoking and selling illegal products something that other kids are desensitized to?
Se encuentran detrás de las mesas durante el almuerzo, hay un montón de paquetes de barras de hojaldre que se habían desecho personalmente. No sólo están los estudiantes fumado durante las horas de la escuela, sino que ni siquiera se toman el tiempo para deshacerse de la evidencia correctamente, sin miedo a las consecuencias debido a lo normalizado que ha sido. Colocando junto a un spork como si fuera cualquier basura regular que encontrarías en el suelo en las instalaciones de la escuela. Ves niños promocionando su negocio de venta de drogas en los redes sociales como si estuvieran vendiendo comida o cualquier otro producto regular. ¿Es injusto que hagan tanto dinero haciendo algo ilegal, o los elogia por ganar dinero a una edad tan temprana, independientemente de todas las consecuencias negativas? ¿Los niños fuman y venden productos ilegales algo a lo que otros niños son insensibles?

This is what the youth in my community see everyday. I see these empty little bottles often. Why these little bottles? Because they are cheaper than buying a big bottle or a six pack. The alcohol companies and liquor stores know how to get people hooked for cheap. Alcohol and drugs can break families apart and the kids will end up using to deal with the sadness. Kids should know what drugs are and be aware, but to be around them all the time-that is what causes harm.
Esto es lo que los jóvenes de mi comunidad ven todos los días. Veo estas pequeñas botellas vacías a menudo. ¿Por qué estas pequeñas botellas? Son más baratas que comprar una botella grande o un paquete de seis. Las compañías de alcohol y las licorerías saben cómo enganchar a la gente por lo barato. El alcohol y las drogas pueden separar a las familias y los niños que terminarán usando para lidiar con la tristeza. Los niños deben saber qué son las drogas y ser conscientes, pero estan a su alrededor todo el tiempo, eso es lo que causa daño.

“Street Pharmacy”
Finding paraphernalia in public spaces should not be so easy. Kids and teenagers a like walk around paraphernalia like this syringe and needle. This is a great contrast when you see that cupcake wrapper next to it. A juxtaposition of something sweet, light and fun right next to the syringe that can represent addiction and some of the darkest moments in someone’s life.

No debe ser tan fácil para encontrar la parafernalia en los espacios públicos. Niños igual que los adolescentes caminan alrededor de la parafernalia como esta jeringa y aguja. Esto es un gran contrasto cuando ves ese envoltorio de magdalenas junto a él. Una yuxtaposición de algo dulce, ligero y divertido justo al lado de la jeringa que representa adicción y algunos de los momentos más oscuros de la vida de alguien.

This photo presented is a screen shot from a video found on social media showing a person displaying their large alcohol collection. Also, it is spreading misinformation by saying that alcohol helps kill COVID-19, which according to the World Health Organization, “Drinking alcohol does not protect you against COVID-19 and can be dangerous.” Since this video is on social media, the video can be seen by many children under the legal drinking age, and the video might even encourage them to start drinking at a very young age.
